BIO:

Steve Lutz, Oklahoma State Head Coach

The architect behind successful rebuilds at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Western Kentucky is at it again in Stillwater.

Two years after inheriting a 20-loss team, Steve Lutz led Oklahoma State to a 20-win season in 2025-26 and a second consecutive postseason appearance, continuing a steady upward trajectory for the program.

A rising star in the profession, Lutz is one of a select few coaches to reach the postseason in each of his first five seasons -- and the only one to do so at three different programs.

Lutz owns a 106-68 career record, averaging more than 21 wins per season, with one regular-season title and three conference tournament championships to his name. Prior to OSU, the San Antonio native guided Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances (2022, 2023) and led Western Kentucky to the 2024 NCAA Tournament in his lone season.

Lutz’s teams are defined by pace and pressure. Oklahoma State has ranked among the nation’s top 15 in adjusted tempo in each of his first two seasons, pairing an up-tempo offense with an aggressive, opportunistic defense. His 2024-25 squad set a school record for steals (9.1 per game) and reached the NIT quarterfinals.

In 2025-26, the Cowboys emerged as one of the nation’s most improved offensive teams, ranking among the top 25 nationally in scoring (83.9 ppg) and breaking a school record for total points previously held by the 1995 Final Four team led by Bryant “Big Country” Reeves. Despite significant injuries, OSU finished 20-15 with wins over No. 16 BYU, No. 25 UCF and Texas A&M, advancing to the second round of the NIT.

Respected throughout the coaching community, Lutz has twice been a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award, which honors success on the court alongside integrity and character.

Before becoming a head coach, Lutz spent 11 seasons as an assistant at Creighton (2010-17) and Purdue (2017-21), helping both programs to sustained national success. He was part of seven NCAA Tournament teams, including Sweet 16 and Elite Eight runs with Purdue in 2018 and 2019, and contributed to Creighton’s successful transition into the BIG EAST.

Along the way, Lutz played a role in developing two national players of the year — Doug McDermott (2014) at Creighton and Zach Edey (2023) at Purdue -- and helped recruit Edey to West Lafayette.

His coaching lineage includes time under Greg McDermott and Matt Painter, placing him within the extended coaching trees of Eddie Sutton and Henry Iba.

Lutz began his coaching career with stops at Incarnate Word (1995-99), Garden City CC (1999-00), Stephen F. Austin (2000-06) and SMU (2006-10). He played collegiately at Ranger College and Texas Lutheran, earning his degree in kinesiology in 1995, and later added a master’s in physical education from Incarnate Word.

Lutz and his wife, Shannon, have three children: Caroline, McKenna and Jackson.
